Joshua Olsthoorn

Designer and filmmaker
Working as designer and filmmaker Joshua is born in Amsterdam and living and working since 2011 in Athens, Greece. After abandoning his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven (the Netherlands) he vagabonded in the field of design, communication and visual culture throughout the Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Greece where he co-founded “Typical Organization for Standards & Order”. A multidisciplinary application balancing between typographic and cinematic writing systems is motivating a practical and theoretical application.
Typical Organization
Typical Organization, for Standards & Order, is a werkraum based in Athens, Greece founded in 2013 by Joshua Olsthoorn & Kostas Vlachakis. Their vocation is not to add new surfaces to the existing but instead they are aspiring to discover the ‘typical’ structure of any relevant subject. Shaping the mostly undefined ‘type’ behind the already existing matter they see their work as an etymological procedure to study origin of form and meaning. In 2017 Typical Organization was distinguished as design praxis of the year at EBGE (The Greek Graphic Design & Illustration Awards).
